Sidmouth
is “a town caught still in a timeless charm”. That was the Sidmouth that captivated
the Poet Laureate John Betjeman and it will captivate you too. Beautiful
gardens and leisurely walks, regency history and fine hotels, clean beaches and
friendly shops…it’s all there in this lovely seaside town that nestles beneath
majestic red cliffs and the green hills of the glorious Sid Valley in East Devon.
Much of Sidmouth’s history is gleaned from the Blue Plaques on the buildings
which mirror the era when the Nobility and members of London Society built fine
houses here. Many still exist, while others have become hotels without losing
their Regency charm. Sidmouth’s record as a premier floral town
was confirmed
in 2001, when it won first place for a small town in the prestigious Britain in
Bloom national finals. Sidmouth is a Gateway Town to the 'Jurassic Coast'
and one way of experiencing the delights for those who love coastal walking is
the South West Coast Path which runs through Sidmouth and winds along distinctive
red sandstone cliffs. Sidmouth has everything – history, flowers, tranquillity,
the list is endless – pay us a visit and experience it for yourself. Sidmouth
has a weekly repertory company, which presents full summer season of drama and
comedy at the Manor Pavilion Theatre. Out of season productions are staged by
both amateur and professional companies. Sidmouth’s Radway Cinema has regular
changes of programme. Throughout the summer season Sidmouth Town Band performs
on Sunday evenings in the Connaught Gardens. Sidmouth is full of sporting
activities. There are safe clean beaches for swimming, sailing or windsurfing.
There is a superb golf course and a golf driving
range, plus pitch and putt for
the less energetic. The Cricket Club welcomes visitors and new members to enjoy
good cricket in an idyllic seafront setting. Sidmouth Sailing Club has
regular sailings and Sidmouth Regatta is held during the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Sidmouth is transformed for one week in August when the town welcomes visitors
and performers to its Folk Festival/Week. It is one of the biggest festivals
of its kind in Europe and is a feast of merriment that spills music and dance
onto the seafront and streets of the town. Dates (29th July - 6th August) Sidmouth also hosts
one of Devon's
biggest and brightest carnival processions. The September carnival (Saturday
26th September 09) is part of the East Devon circuit. |
