18th December 2007 Was delighted to present Brian Johanssen of
the Sidmouth St John Ambulance with a cheque for £450 from my
community/locality budget. The money is being put towards training
aids for the members and will also be used to train up members of
the public in First Aid skills. St Johns do a sterling job in the
local community attending many of the local events that take place.
Today the Executive will discuss my notice of motion on fuel tax
which is taking its toll and hitting the pockets of those living in
rural areas of Devon as well as haulers and farmers. I also wonder
just how much the additional tax is costing Devon County Council and
the transport that it runs i.e. gritting lorries, community buses
etc. If you are concerned then sign the online petition to the PM.

Date 15th December 2007 The Stowford Rise Table Top junctions are
now in place and are working well in slowing down the speed of traffic
in this residential area. The contractors have also installed the
remaining drop crossings that I called for as part of the package of
measures to improve the quality of life for the residents.
Date 14th December 2007 My two notices of motion on fuel tax and the
future of the Search and Rescue Helicopter Service that were on
yesterday's Council agenda were both referred to the Executive
Committee. The fuel tax motion will be debated next Tuesday and
hopefully at the meeting it will be agreed to make the strongest
representations to the government to act swiftly in reducing the tax
which is the highest in Europe. Those living in rural areas where
there is little or no public transport are feeling the effects of the
escalating cost of fuel in their pockets and increased transport costs
means dearer food/goods. Farmers are also being hit hard. Are you
concerned? Is the cost of fuel affecting you and your business?

And so Exeter failed in its bid for Unitary Status and quite rightly
so lets face it its financial case didn't add up. You would have
thought that that would be the end of it and the County and
Districts could forge ahead in working closer together....but oh no
the government have to stick their oar in again and refer the whole
shooting match to the boundaries commission to see what changes they
can recommend be it a Unitary Devon splitting Devon in three etc.
Just how much is this exercise going to cost council tax payers and
what effect is it going to have on the workforce at all levels of
local government in Devon? The sooner this Mickey Mouse government
are kicked into the long grass the better. Date
5th December 2007 John Hart and I have submitted a notice of
motion for consideration at next weeks County Council meeting calling
for the Government to take immediate steps to reduce the level of tax on
fuel which is starting to bite hard and is affecting everyone especially
those living in remote rural areas where there isn't any public
transport. The price of fuel has rocketed in recent weeks and I actually
saw one petrol outlet selling diesel at £1.15p a litre.....that is
scandalous. Lets hope that our fellow councillors will support our
notice of motion and if so that the Government will act swiftly in
reducing this unfair tax.
